Lady Dawgs are getting ready for third game against Gateway
An unexpected loss not by the Burnet High School softball team caused an unexpected play-in game for the final District 19-4A playoff spot.
Following a 10-0 loss to Lake Belton April 19, the Lady Dawgs (4-6) found out that Georgetown Gateway (4-6) outlasted Taylor 3-1. With both Burnet and Gateway splitting the regular-season head-to-head matchups, the two will now play on Friday, April 22, at 6 p.m. at Jarrell High School.
“If we show up, I’ll feel confident,” Burnet head coach Hailey Wooten said. “I think we have taught (our players) and instilled mental toughness in them. The normal in Burnet is success, and they know it. They know what is expected of them.”
Lake Belton (10-0) scored a run in the first inning, four in the third and five in the fifth to activate the run rule. The Lady Dawgs committed three errors, but most of the Lady Broncos’ runs were earned.
“They were hitting the ball,” Wooten said. “They’re a good team, and I don’t want to take anything away from them. Whenever they get hot, it’s hard to beat them. They outhit us and outplayed us. They hit the ball and did what they were supposed to do.”
Lake Belton pitcher Shelby Schultz had eight strikeouts in five innings.
As for the game against Georgetown Gateway, Wooten said the Lady Dawgs are preparing to fight to extend their season.
“I don’t think any of them are ready to be done,” she said. “They understand they have to come with a purpose, that they have something to prove. If we can get going, we’ll carry momentum throughout the game. I’m confident.”
